The Jerusalem Embassy Relocation Act

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
US Embassy Tel Aviv

Are you at all familiar with the Jerusalem Embassy Relocation Act? This act, to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was passed overwhelmingly on October 23, 1995, by both the Senate (93-5) and the House (374-37).

The Act then states what henceforth will be not Congressional preferences but the official policy of the United States toward Jerusalem: that it should remain a united city in which the rights of every ethnic and religious group are protected; that it should be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel; and that the U.S. Embassy should be established there no later than May 31, 1999.

1995. If you were born in 1995, you would be sixteen years old this year. For sixteen years, the will of the people, as reflected by the vote of their representatives has been overridden, delayed and virtually ignored by the executive branch. What are the odds that a president who advocates a return to a border which divides Jerusalem, would ever implement this act of Congress?

In June of last year, Obama, like his predecessors before him, delayed the implementation of this law.

For the third time, U.S. President Barack Obama delayed for six months moving the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Ever since 1995, when the Jerusalem Embassy Act was passed ordering the transfer of the U.S. embassy, U.S. presidents have routinely delayed the move.

The fourth time would be December 3, 2010

Anyone want to make book if he'll go for five? Me, neither.

Update: If he were serious that "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided", as he told AIPAC in 2008 when he was running for president, he would back up his words with deeds. Don't look for that to happen anytime soon.

Netanyahu on Hannity -video

We've seen a lot of Benjamin Netanyahu this week, prompted by his visit to the US, preceded by the colossal blundering of Barack Obama in his latest foreign policy speech.

This man is plain spoken and a breath of fresh air compared to some of his US counterparts.

Israeli Prime Minister Gets 29 Standing Ovations in Congress

...at his 2011 SOTU, Obama got 25. (Not that anyone's counting!)

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before a joint meeting of Congress had all trappings of a State of the Union address by a president with sky-high approval ratings.

Speaking to a packed House chamber with Speaker Boehner and Vice President Biden over his shoulders, Netanyahu was repeatedly interrupted by applause – including more than 20 standing ovations. One of his biggest applause lines was aimed directly at President Obama.

“Israel will not return to the indefensible boundaries of 1967,” Netanyahu said, prompting a big standing ovation.

Prime Minister Netanyahu seems to be getting a lot warmer reception for his views than Obama is getting for his. And rightly so!

The Least Serious President in the History of the Republic™ Speaks at AIPAC, Again

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Israel can sleep safely tonight! Barry has imposed sanctions on Iran!

The Least Serious President in the History of the Republic™ addressed an AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington today. (Candidate Obama addressed them in 2008.) A couple of things jumped out at me.

We also know how difficult that search for security can be, especially for a small nation like Israel in a tough neighborhood.

A "tough neighborhood"??? Excuse me, Mr. President, but Israel is a nation under siege from its enemies. Chicago has rough neighborhoods, Israel is in a war zone.

"You also see our commitment to our shared security in our determination to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Here in the U.S., we’ve imposed the toughest sanctions ever on the Iranian regime."

Tough sanctions against Iran? How'd that work out for us against Saddam Hussein in Iraq?
Did tough sanctions bring down his regime or bring about peace in the region or extinguish his desire to rebuild his WMD capabilities? Israel can sleep safely tonight! Barry has imposed sanctions! /sarcasm

"...a new generation of Arabs is reshaping the region."

Oh, you mean like the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, after you were instrumental in the removal of Mubarak, who are avowedly hostile to Israel? And whatever factions are rebelling in Libya, about whose ideologies and intentions towards Israel you haven't a clue?

So, let me see...we have turmoil in Egypt, Syria, and Libya, where you just started a military action. We have shooting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and you sent a military mission into Pakistan, without the knowledge or permission of their government, and now you want to impose your will on our lone democratic ally in the Middle East, because...you needed to draw attention away from your golf outings??

"The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps"

Here's where you plan goes off the rails, Mr. President. Take the city of Jerusalem, the city of David, the capitol of Israel. Your proposal not only has it jutting like a peninsula into what would then be another country, but the old lines transect Jerusalem. Which part of Jerusalem do you envision either side would "mutually agree" to give up? On what would you base that belief? Certainly not on the last 44 years of history! And you have publicly stated that Jerusalem "must remain undivided". Who mutually agreed to that swap, Mr. President?

In the end, you have a pretty speech, which is only as dependable as the man who gives it. Too often in the past, Obama's promises have come with an expiration date. Why should we believe these are any different? And why should the nation of Israel risk its security and existence based on your words, Mr. Obama?

"Here's a piece of Israel for the Palestinians, and a piece for Egypt, and a piece for Jordan and a piece for Syria and a piece for Lebanon... "

"Push Israel Into the Sea"

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

"We will push Israel into the sea, and then we will destroy America, the great Satan." That’s the chant of the radical Muslim fundamentalists.

"Push Israel into the sea"? Obama's proposed map looks like a pretty good start! (Which is why, thankfully, Israel will never agree to it.)

Obama Sees ’67 Borders as Starting Point for Peace Deal

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

WASHINGTON — President Obama, seeking to capture a moment of epochal change in the Arab world, began a new effort on Thursday to break the stalemate in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, setting out a new starting point for negotiations on the region’s most intractable problem.

...The Israeli government immediately protested, saying that for Israel to return to its pre-1967 borders would leave it “indefensible.” Mr. Netanyahu held an angry phone call with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday morning before the speech, officials said, in which he demanded that the president’s reference to 1967 borders be cut.

So many things wrong with this. First, it goes against long standing support for defensible borders for Israel. It gives away the high ground of the Golan Heights and bringing virtually all of the country into mortar and rocket range of its enemies.

Second, why 1967? What gives the president of the United States the right to demand what territories a sovereign and democratic state must cede to its neighbors and, truth be told, enemies based on a purely arbitrary determination? The claims of Israel on what has been called the Promised Land go back literally thousands of years. Why 1967?

It is interesting that for many years liberals accused conservatives of wanting to "turn back the clock" on any number of issues. Why does Obama want to "turn back the clock" on Israel? And compared to thousands of years of Israeli history, 44 years is but a tiny fraction. Why not add a couple of decades and take the borders back to the 1947 borders? What's that you say? The modern state of Israel did not come into existence until 1948? Reducing Israel to a country eight miles across will go far in returning Israel to its 1947 borders...

And just for giggles, what if the President of Mexico demanded that the US return to it's pre-1848 borders before it would negotiate any new treaties with us? If Obama can void the Six Day war, why can't Mexico void the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo?

Update on "A Tale of Two Buses": Student Dies from Injuries

An update to our story of ten days ago.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Daniel Viflic, 16, was critically injured when the school bus he was riding on was directly hit by an anti-tank missile fired from Gaza Strip.

The 16-year-old boy who was injured in the anti-tank missile attack on a school bus in the Negev by Hamas terrorists 10 days ago, died on Sunday after a steady decline to critical condition.

Viflic suffered severe head trauma and was artificially respirated at the scene after the bus sustained a direct hit by a missile. He was rushed to Soroka University Medical Center Hospital in Beersheba, where his family has been holding vigil for the past ten days. On April 12, the severity of his condition was upgraded to extremely critical and doctors expressed concern that he had suffered irreparable brain damage.

The anti-tank missile hit the bus moments after most of the children got off, while it was traveling near Kibbutz Sa’ad, about 2.5 km. from the Gaza Strip. Just two people were on onboard when it was hit – the driver, who was lightly injured, and the boy, who was en route to visit his grandmother.

Our prayers are with Daniel's family.

A Tale of Two School Buses

I heard about this on the radio today, and it made me think of another incident with a school bus that was in the news recently.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

An anti-tank missile fired from the Gaza Strip has struck a school bus in southern Israel, wounding two people, including one child critically, according to Israeli officials.

Israeli tanks retaliated by opening fire across the border. Palestinians said a 50-year-old man was killed and seven other people were wounded.

Israel's defence minister, Ehud Barak, ordered the army to respond quickly and said he held Hamas, which controls Gaza, responsible for the violence. There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.

Israeli medical services said the bus was nearly empty after dropping off schoolchildren and was carrying only the driver and one passenger when it was hit. Paramedics tried to resuscitate a 16-year-old boy with a serious head wound at the scene. The driver was moderately wounded
.

Flashback to 1976:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

SACRAMENTO — California's parole board on Tuesday granted parole for a man convicted of hijacking a school bus and holding 26 children and their driver captive underground in 1976, the latest turn in a years-long debate over whether the three men involved in the crime have served enough time.

Richard Allen Schoenfeld was set for release in 2021. However, any governor in the next 10 years can ask the board to reconsider its decision, board spokesman Luis Patino said.

Schoenfeld, now age 56, along with his brother Jim, and Fred Woods, captured the nation's attention when they used guns and nylon masks to commandeer a Chowchilla school bus. They then buried the children and driver in a truck underground. The three were sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

In 1976, the nation was shocked that anyone would target a school bus for a kidnapping. In 2011, people regularly try to blow them up with people inside and it hardly makes the news. Wonder why that is?

Smart Is As Smart Does As Smart Says - Bam Says Israel Is Suspicious Of Him Because Of His Middle Name

by guest blogger Andrew Roman
____________________________

I deviate from much of my conservative brethren on the matter of Barack Obama’s intelligence. While we concur that the President’s big-government, Marxist-friendly agenda is steadily destroying the country as we know it, I find myself in the minority regarding the man’s astuteness and aptitude.

Despite his transformative approach (i.e., his America-wrecking leftism), it has become conventional wisdom that Barack Obama is, unquestionably, a sharp and sagacious man.

He is an intellectual, a scholar - at least that's what we’ve been told time and time again.

And even if we disagree with him - even if our dissent is resounding and unwavering - we must grant that he is remarkably precocious.

If I had a dollar for each time I’ve been apprised of the President's supposed mental dexterity, how clever he really is – including from the majority of pundits and wordsmiths on my side of the aisle – I’d have enough cash to get this country operating in the black. (Absolutely no pun intended there, Sheila Jackson Lee).

I don’t buy it.

Not for a moment.

Barack Hussein Obama is a dulcet-toned sponge swollen with leftist rhetoric, knee-jerk anti-capitalist blather, and university-cultivated hyperbole. He is a man who hasn’t a clue about much of anything beyond the campus brain-clutter that keeps his political base (somewhat) satisfied and his teleprompter in business.

He is a polished appetizer-platter of meaningless Vietnam-era clichés. He is a messiah in a world contrived in his mind that neither asked for nor needs him.

His responses to critical questions reveal a man who is in over his head - a man spinning his wheels in campaign-mode mud - without the ability to be particularly thoughtful or substantive.

He is a man who has contempt for liberty and rugged individualism.

He almost always sounds foolish.

And America continues to pay the price.

No, dear friends, he isn't brilliant.

Rather, he's ignorant and way out of his league.

And I assure you, I don't mean this as an insult. I don't write it for the shock value. It's meant as an honest description.

How else to explain Barack Obama’s appraisal of how the nation of Israel views him? How else to explain how unpopular he is with Israelis?

The fact is: President Obama is disliked in Israel. “Hope and Change” just hasn’t caught on in the little nation by the Mediterranean.

But that's okay.

The President has it figured out.

Barack Obama has tapped into his legendary well of cerebral prowess, summoning his ability to survey complicated situations – taking a page from his own Bammy's Handbook of Critical Thought and Assessment - and has come up with the reason why they Israelis don't adore him (like they should).

According to the President, the reason for his disfavor may be rooted in his middle name, Hussein.

From Haaretz:

During (an) interview Wednesday, when confronted with the anxiety that some Israelis feel toward him, Obama said that "some of it may just be the fact that my middle name is Hussein, and that creates suspicion."

"Ironically, I've got a Chief of Staff named Rahm Israel Emmanuel. My top political advisor is somebody who is a descendent of Holocaust survivors. My closeness to the Jewish American community was probably what propelled me to the U.S. Senate," Obama said.

"I think that sometimes, particularly in the Middle East, there's the feeling of the friend of my enemy must be my enemy, and the truth of the matter is that my outreach to the Muslim community is designed precisely to reduce the antagonism and the dangers posed by a hostile Muslim world to Israel and to the West," Obama went on to say.
If only his middle name were Bill or Moshe, Israel would have already renamed the city of Haifa for him ... because the anxiety Israelis feel with Bam in the White House has nothing to do with his actions.

Right?

*cough*

If ever there was a more disconnected, out-of-touch, misguided man at the helm of the free world, I am not aware of it.

Does the President realize how painfully naïve - and frankly, dumb … he sounds? This is the brilliant metrosexual from Chicago? This is the new-age, post-racial, post-political intellectual that dazzled so many people during the campaign season two years ago? Does the President truly believe his unpopularity in Israel is about his name? Is that the depth of his analysis as to why Israelis are suspicious of him?

It certainly couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that the President has hung one of America’s closest allies out to dry since taking office, could it?

It wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that the only democracy in that region – a nation where Arabs and Jews leave peacefully together – has seen her closest friend break several security commitments, turn a cold shoulder to her, and embrace those who exist to see her destroyed, would it?

It wouldn’t have anything to do with Obama’s apologetic demeanor toward terrorist thugs, would it?

It wouldn’t have anything to do with the President’s willingness to sit down and try to negotiate with those terrorists whose very existence is hinged on not only Israel’s destruction, but America's, would it?

It wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that in his book Audacity Of Hope, Obama wrote: "'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction," would it?

It couldn't have anything to do with President Obama’s propensity to bow to foreign heads of state, could it?

It wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that President Obama considers the location of the construction of some Jewish homes a far more important matter – a greater impediment to peace – than the notion that there are entire nations who vow to eliminate Israel from the face of the earth?

It wouldn't have anything to do with the President's twisted infatuation with creating moral equivelancy, would it?

So, this is about his name?

My Lord, what on God’s green earth is President Obama talking about?

Is it possible for anyone to disagree with President Obama without being labeled as bigoted in some way? Or racist? Or whatever “phobic” he wishes to label his detractors with? Is it necessary for everything to be filtered through the Barack Obama prism? Is everything about Barack Obama?

And why is it that Barack Obama continues to insist that the Middle East "problem" is a complicated one?

It isn't.

The conflict is very simple.

Israel wishes to exist. Her enemies want her destroyed.

Next.

And while the solution is difficult - precisely because one side refuses to accept the very existence of the other - the problem is simple to grasp ... or it should be.

Even for intellectually vapid messiahs.

"Humanitarian Aid" Exemplified

Roger Kimball over at Pajamas Media had this little bit of video (one minute) about the captured "humanitarian aid" vessel Mavi Marmara:

The weapons cache on that vessel was small potatoes, but there was no way for the Israelis to know what kind of weapons it might be carrying. Having said that, slingshots, stones, clubs and knives are hardly the stuff of “relief supplies” are they?
In fact, slingshots are the kind of thing one would use to increase tensions and provoke confrontation, yet still trying to maintain a sense of deniability, are they not?

The Mavi Marmara provoked the confrontation by attempting to run the blockade. Had they allowed inspection of their cargo, violence would have been avoided.
All in all, it was a badly staged bit of political theater. Beating Israeli troops with metal pipes and throwing them overboard, all so that you can transport slingshots, clubs and knives into a trouble area speaks of anything but "peace".
