If You Liked Gray Davis, You'll Love His Old Boss!

I know that some of you folks aren't old enough to remember the first time that Jerry Brown, a.k.a. "Governor Moonbeam" was governor of California. So it may come as some surprise to you who was working as Jerry Brown's Chief of Staff: Gray Davis.

Yes, that Gray Davis! The one that Californian's were so fed up with, that they held a very expensive recall election just to get rid of.

Here's Gray Davis doing his Chevy Chase impression next to former Governor Jerry Brown.
(Like "former President Jimmy Carter", "former Governor Brown" has a nice ring to it!)

But, don't underestimate Jerry Brown. After his first term of office, I was almost certain that there was no way this clown could get re-elected. But he did. One way was by never letting the facts get in the way of a good story.

I remember when Brown was up for re-election and he was running against Republican Evelle Younger. During a debate, where former Governor Pat Brown and his wife were in the audience, Younger, ever the courteous gentleman, spoke to Mrs. Brown and said, "With all due respect, Mrs. Brown, your son is the worst governor in the history of California.*"

Brown was interviewed on the radio the next day and generated as much faux outrage as he could muster and accused Younger of "insulting my mother". It was an absurd thing to say for anybody who heard the debate, but Brown was gambling that more people listened to the radio than watched the debate. The lie was out there about Younger's character...completely the opposite of the respect Younger showed Mrs. Brown , but the impression left by her weaselly, lying son was out there.

Coincidentally, Governor Moonbeam is "out there". Among the false impressions he is spreading this campaign, is that he is some big "law and order candidate".
This is a man who opposes the death penalty, appointed a California Supreme Court Chief Justice who strongly opposed the death penalty, and I will bet you that if this liar gets re-elected to the Governor's chair, he will exercise his right to commute the sentences of death row inmates. This fellow who could not be executed this week because some of the drugs had expired has nothing to fear from a Jerry Brown administration. The people of California do.

Update: I've decided to free lance for the Brown campaign. I've been coming up with some pretty good slogans. In addition to "If You Liked Gray Davis, You'll Love His Old Boss", I've got: "Jerry Brown: Gray Davis without all that pesky hair!"

*Note: If Gloria Allred is listening, this is my recollection from over thirty years ago, so it may not be verbatim. Please don't call me a "liar".
